The Area’s History
One of the first colonial settlements in the United States was at the southernmost point in St. Mary’s City. Part of the original site is a museum and the other portion of the original site is home to St. Mary’s College of Maryland.

According to Maryland’s state website, the area is fairly mild year round. The average annual temperature is 55.1 degrees Fahrenheit. The peak of precipitation is in July and August with an average annual precipitation of 40.76 inches. The average annual snowfall is 20.6 inches.
Southern Maryland Colleges
College of Southern Maryland is located in La Plata, Maryland. St. Mary’s College of Maryland is located in St. Mary’s City. Both offer a wide range of programs and courses.
Southern Maryland Hotels & Restaurants
The area has most of the major hotel chains you would expect to find – i.e. Hilton, Holiday Inn, La Quinta, Comfort Inn & Suites, Spring Hill Suites, etc. It is interesting to note that the majority of hotels are located near busy highways, so you won’t always be able to find a hotel in some of the small towns.
